Chris Ashton completed a second mid-season move in the space of 10 months today by joining his fifth Premiership club, Worcester, with immediate effect.

The 33-year-old has left his Harlequins contract early and signed for Warriors until the end of the 2021-22 season as he chases his dream of scoring 100 league tries.

So far on 88 – after stints at Northampton, Saracens, Sale and Quins – he is hunting down Tom Varndell’s record of 92 tries.

The former England wing, known for his ‘Ash Splash’ celebration, said: ‘I would like to thank Harlequins for agreeing to release me early from my contract to be able to join Worcester Warriors.

‘The ability to continue my career in the Premiership and play regular rugby means that this move is right for me and my family at this time.’

Ashton never got going at Quins, who he joined from Sale in the middle of the last campaign, playing just seven league matches for the Londoners having picked up injury knocks.

Worcester have now snapped him up having seen full-back Melani Nanai ruled out for the rest of the season with a torn hamstring, and Noah Heward has a similar injury.

‘We are pleased to welcome Chris to Sixways. He is a quality, proven international, who is equally at home at wing or full-back,’ said Warriors Director of Rugby Alan Solomons.

‘With Melani out for the season and Noah’s return being further delayed, the timing could not have been better.

‘Chris is the consummate professional and will be a good role model for our younger players. I have no doubt that Chris will make his mark here.’

Ashton will be tasked with helping bring through younger players at Sixways, according to assistant Jonathan Thomas who he previously linked up with when putting England to the sword for the Barbarians scoring a hat-trick in a 63-45 win in 2018.

‘As a club we have made a commitment to develop our home-grown youngsters and we have a very talented group coming through,’ said Thomas.

‘But to accelerate their development they need to see what good looks like and how international players communicate, prepare and conduct themselves.

‘Chris is going to be of huge benefit in improving our young players. Not just the back three players, but all the players in the squad.’

Worcester will be Ashton’s sixth rugby union club, having played for a year in Toulon, since his switch from league and Wigan in 2007.
