Arsenal forced to turn to David Luiz after Rob Holding suffered hamstring injury in the warm-up ahead of Manchester City clash as Brazilian returns to the scene of his disastrous 25-minute cameo at the Etihad in June

  • David Luiz had a horror-show when Arsenal played Manchester City back in June
  • He was at fault for Manchester City’s opener during a 3-0 defeat for Arsenal
  • Luiz also gave away a penalty and was sent off after coming on as a substitute
  • Since then Luiz has bounced back and has been in impressive form for Arsenal
  • Luiz again was listed for the bench, but Rob Holding was injured pre-match

Arsenal were forced to turn to David Luiz who started their game against Manchester City on Saturday, following a disastrous game against Pep Guardiola‘s side in June.

The Brazilian centre-back had an awful 25 minute cameo during a 3-0 defeat the Etihad back in June.

His mistake allowed Manchester City to bag an opener before he then gave away a penalty which saw him also receive a red card.

Luiz was not in the starting line-up for Saturday’s return to the Etihad but Mikel Arteta was forced into a change before the game had even begun.

Rob Holding who was supposed to start, was injured in the warm-up with a calf issue.

Arteta will now be hoping that Luiz does not have a performance anything like his display in June.

During Sky Sports pre-match coverage, Sol Campbell reacted to the news as he said: ‘Shame this happened in the warm-up but Rob’s been doing really well and coming off some big injuries.

‘He just needs that consistency maybe it’s his calf who knows but David Luiz is a top player he had a bit of a shaky time last time but he has settled down and come back and played some good football. I don’t think he’s gonna be surprised like last time.’

His co-pundit Micah Richards described Luiz’s performance in June as ‘calamitous’.

He said: ‘Calamitious was the word to describe his performance but it’s happened to best players. Sometimes the occasion can get to players I’m sure he would have learned from the last game and put up a better performance.’

His Arsenal career looked in tatters following his mistake in June but the Brazilian has used that mistake to turn around his form.

Luiz has improved his level of performances and been a solid member of Arteta’s improving Gunners squad.
