‘He could make Rotherham a Premier League club’: Ex-Arsenal midfielder Paul Merson claims Liverpool’s Jurgen Klopp is better than Pep Guardiola as he has not spent as much money
Guardiola has won five major trophies since arriving at Manchester City in 2016, comprising the FA Cup, two League Cups and two Premier League titles, but Merson believes Klopp has done superior work on Merseyside.
The German arrived at Anfield in October 2015 and has led the Reds to a Europa League final and two Champions League finals, the second of which resulted in the club’s sixth European Cup triumph.
Liverpool also won the UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup this year, and Klopp’s men look destined to win the league for the first time since the 1989-90 season, holding a 13-point lead at the top of the division.
‘It’s all down to Klopp,’ wrote Merson in his Daily Star column. ‘He’s built that team. And he’s beating Guardiola even though he hasn’t spent anywhere near as much money.
‘That’s what makes him the best. Klopp could take Rotherham through the divisions and make them a Premier League club, given time.
‘Guardiola can’t do that. He needs £80m or £90m players to make his system work. Klopp doesn’t. It’s a massive achievement, what he’s built.’
