‘When I played the derby, I had him always up against me. Messi, I could deal with him.’

Milner was asked about what Evra said in the pre-match press conference to Liverpool’s Champions League clash with Genk on Wednesday night.

A reporter asked the 33-year-old to give his ‘most frustrating opponent’ and after bursting out laughing, replied: ‘Players? I don’t know really, it’s hard to name one obviously but it’s nice to know Patrice thought I was a nuisance.’

Speaking on Sky Sports, Evra also picked Carlos Tevez ahead of Wayne Rooney in his ‘ultimate’ starting XI of former team-mates at Manchester United and Juventus.

Evra was in the studio for Sheffield United’s 1-0 victory over Arsenal, and spoke passionately and intelligently on a number of topics, including racism and the Luis Suarez incident of 2011-12.

‘This one was a tough choice, Tevez or Wayne Rooney?’ admitted Evra.

‘But it comes from my heart, even if I am a close friend to Wayne… I played with Tevez in Manchester and Juventus, and what a player. He is a warrior and when we had him and Wayne up front, I was feeling sorry for the defenders.’
