Nicolas Mahut reduced a ball girl to tears by hitting her in the face with a practise serve after the point had finished.

The 37-year-old Frenchman had just been broken by Stan Wawrinka in the first set of their second-round match at the Fever-Tree Championships when he frustratedly fired down a serve.

The ball girl, who was bending to retrieve another ball and not watching because the game was over, was caught flush on the face.

The world No 191 was given a warning for unsportsmanlike conduct by Swedish umpire Mohamed Lahyani and could face a fine.

Wawrinka had his back turned to the incident but noticed the ball girl in tears and went over to comfort her.

Mahut, who came back to upset the No 7 seed 3-6, 7-5, 7-6, eventually also went over as she was led from the court.

In his first round Mahut also forced a ball girl off court, slipping over and colliding with her in the corner.

Earlier in the day the luckless Juan Martin del Potro announced he had broken his right patella for the second time in eight months.

The Argentine took what looked like an innocuous slip in his first round victory against Denis Shapovalov on Monday but he withdrew from his next match and on Thursday announced that he would require surgery.
