Manchester City ‘set to beat Manchester United’ to the signing of £80m Leicester defender Harry Maguire because ‘he wants to play under Pep Guardiola’
- Leicester’s Harry Maguire is being pursued by both of the Manchester clubs
- Reports suggest that the England international would prefer Manchester City
- Maguire has been at Leicester for two years after a £17m transfer from Hull
The England international has been targeted by both Manchester clubs after another impressive campaign with The Foxes.
And, according to The Mirror, City have stolen a march on their rivals because Maguire wants to play under Pep Guardiola.
Leicester defender Harry Maguire is wanted by both of the Manchester clubs
Maguire has established himself as an England regular during his time with Leicester
Maguire has been a Leicester player for two years, joining in a £17m move from Hull in 2017.
His form at the King Power stadium saw him break into the England squad and he played a central role as Gareth Southgate’s side reached the semi-final of the World Cup last summer.
The asking price Leicester have for Maguire has been reported to be as high as £80m, with speculation suggesting that United were prepared to offer Andreas Pereira to try and lower the fee.
Maguire was wanted by United last summer when Jose Mourinho was manager but a move failed to materialise.
Maguire is said to favour champions City so he can play under their manager Pep Guardiola
The news will be a blow to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer during a summer of rebuilding at Old Trafford
But it is City, last season’s Premier League winners, who Maguire would prefer to join if it came down to a straight choice.
United finished sixth last season and manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is expected to usher in a summer of change at Old Trafford.
Daniel James from Swansea has already been signed, with Crystal Palace defender Aaron Wan-Bissaka likely to follow soon.
