Manchester United are increasingly confident of clinching the £25million capture of midfielder Sean Longstaff, according to the Daily Mirror.

The 21-year-old Newcastle midfielder has emerged as a top summer target for United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Solskjaer wants to follow up the £15m signing of ‘electric’ winger Daniel James from Swansea by recruiting Longstaff for his ambitious rebuild.

Longstaff emerged as a surprise target for United ahead of the summer transfer window, having caught their interest during a 13-game run in the Newcastle first-team last season.

It came despite Longstaff suffering serious ligament damage in his knee – with the 21-year-old admitting he had ‘learned to walk again’ recently.

He has now started running and kicking a ball again and could be fit for the start of the new season.

Asked about the interest from United, Longstaff replied: ‘It shows how far I have come. If someone told me at the start of the season I’d be getting linked with these teams I’d have laughed.

‘I’m massively flattered to have my name even mentioned in those conversations but like I said, I’m 100 per cent focused on Newcastle and trying to get fit and get back in the team here.

‘I have had a small taste of it, and I want more. I want to get fit and be in for a whole season.’
