It has been 12 years since Bollywood actors Aishwarya Rai and Abhishek Bachchan got married in 2007 but the interest in their lives continues to grow among fans. Aishwarya’s wedding was perhaps the first hyped celebrity weddings, in recent times, which generated so much interest and paparazzi craze. Yet, this was an era before the coming of social media. And while, marriage, motherhood and reduction of movie assignments, could lead to a dip in popularity, with Aishwarya, nothing seems to have changed. Looks like fans want to be part of every aspect of her life, irrespective of films. No wonder even her post-partum fat became talk of town.

While a bulk of her contemporaries, even her family members – father-in-law and husband – were quick to jump onto Instagram and Twitter, Aishwarya stayed away, only to join Instagram in 2018. There has been a curious interest on the status of their relationship too. They are also proud parents to their seven-year-old daughter Aaradhya, quite a star in her own right, on social media. The two have often spoken about each other and contrary to popular perception, they remain like any other couple – much on love and often arguing over matters – like the rest of us. On their 12th wedding anniversary, here’s a look at what either has said about the other.

1. On Aishwarya as a super mom:

“Her (Aishwarya’s) professionalism and dedication is unquestionable. As a mother (of Aaradhya) she is superb..she is a super mom.”

2. On Aishwarya as a co-star:

“As a co-star, I have always loved working with her. It is a pleasure. I love her as an actor. I am a big fan of her and she should be given the liberty to choose the films she wants to do.”

3. On fasting with her on Karwa Chauth:

“I don’t believe in it (Karva Chauth), but if my wife is doing something for my health, then it is my duty to be with her. That’s why I will be flying to be with my wife.”

4. On arguments with Abhishek:

“We’re both genetically very generously been given very strong genes. So, we’re inherently very strong personalities. I think there is a very fine line between arguing and discussing and that’s something we’re still arriving at discovering what is what. So, we discuss a lot, either politely put it as discuss, probably argue but…”

5. Acting advice Aishwarya gave Abhishek:

“My wife told me, ‘Check your teeth, check your nose.’ Suddenly, the audience realises for time immemorial, ‘That’s what he had for lunch.’ In our first film, Dhai Akshar Prem Ke, that’s what she said.”

6. Abhishek on faith in his wife:

“If a man tries to restrain his wife, then there must be two reasons for it. Firstly, he’s insecure. Secondly, he doesn’t trust her. I am neither.”

7. On the best thing about being married to him:

“That you’re with your dearest friend for the rest of your life!”

8. On the best thing about being married to her:

“I get to live with my best friend. I can talk to her about anything, any inane thing, like ‘Someone scratched my car today’ and she’s there listening, saying, ‘Umm.. Umm.’”

9. On being the Padma Shrimati to his Padma Shri:

“Abhishek is my source of inspiration. He is always so supportive. Whenever I am confused and don’t know what to do, I look at him and he solves the duality in me like magic. He is the real ‘Padma Shri’ and I’m his ‘Padma Shrimati’.”

10. On how he proposed to her:

“I was filming in New York for a movie and I used to stand on the balcony of my hotel room and wish that, one day, you know, wouldn’t it be nice if I was together with her, married. So I took her to the very same balcony, and I asked her to marry me.”

11. On what keeps them together:

“Our relationship is not based on her being Aishwarya Rai or me coming from an illustrious family.”

12. On what she respects about his career decisions:

“I really appreciate and admire that about Abhishek that he has the guts to take the risks irrespective of how or what kind of a course it may chart in a hero’s life.”

13. On waking up next to her:

“In some ways we feel like a newly married old couple. It feels like we have spent our entire lives together but it’s still a thrill to wake up in the morning and see her lying next to me. And then it’s like, get up and get the coffee, woman!”

14. On taking her side:

“I just think it’s extremely insensitive and no one has the liberty to speak about her like the way they sometimes do”

15. On who fell in love first:

“I’ve never asked who fell in love first, actually. I’ll have to ask her that. But the moment we got together we knew this was it.”Aish agreed and added, “It’s not like we said ‘One minute, let the relationship marinate, we want time to get to know each other.”
