‘It has not been the most straight-forward of weekends’: Lewis Hamilton admits surprise at serene Chinese Grand Prix win as Mercedes claim third one-two finish of the season

  • Hamilton overtook Valtteri Bottas on the first corner and never looked in danger
  • The Mercedes world champion had not set the pace at the start of the weekend
  • However he won in Shanghai and now leads the drivers’ championship

Lewis Hamilton admitted he was slightly surprised at how comfortable the Chinese Grand Prix was for Mercedes after claiming victory in Shanghai.

Hamilton overtook Valtteri Bottas on the first corner and never looked likely to be unseated. The Finn came home second for a third straight Mercedes one-two this season.

The world champion had not set the pace at the start of the weekend – he was fourth in third practice – but he was pleased to deliver when it mattered.

‘It has not been the most straight-forward of weekends,’ said Hamilton. ‘We didn’t know where we would stand with the Ferraris when we arrived.

‘Valtteri has been quick all weekend and to get a one-two finish in the 1000th Grand Prix is special. The start was where I made the move, and the rest is history.’

Sebastian Vettel reached the podium for the first time this season, as Ferrari’s race was dominated by the decision to order Charles Leclerc to move aside for the German.

Leclerc was unhappy as he felt he had enough pace to challenge the front runners, but Vettel backed the team’s call.

Asked if Ferrari made the right decision to allow him past Leclerc, Vettel said: ‘Yes, I felt I could go faster.

‘Then it was difficult for me to find the rhythm. I had a couple of wobbles but I think it is fair if you see the whole race.’
